Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
