The artist has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the UK's independent live music spots.

He was given the prize on October 16 as his new release People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the previous year.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part small stages had in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I played around the North East, and further afield, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

In the last year, well-known musicians like Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.

He also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist numerous small stages across Britain.

The money helped locations that were facing possible closure due to issues stemming from flooding, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Additional spaces obtained financial assistance in improving amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The notion that revenue from shows in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize funds to charitable organizations.

In the band received the prize in the mid-90s for their release the album, lead singer the singer announced that the group would contribute their cash to the organization War Child.

During 2002, artist she divided her award among a few organizations, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

Two years ago, the band donated their winnings to the local youth club that nurtured their band, as well as other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients the group contributed their award to a MS organization after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was ample," said singer Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory affected another person's life."

Last week, the trust revealed it had rescued a couple of local spots in the South East, by transferring them to local control.

One venue in that area and the other in that location were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and music fans who purchase "ownership units" in the buildings.
